Le Petit Paris

Address : Shop 2076, Level 2,
8 Finance Street, ifc Mall, Central.
Tel:2805 5293

Based in the IFC and occupying one of the most coveted spaces in the building overlooking the harbour, Le Petit Paris is a French style brasserie located on the second floor. Dark wood is coupled with rich red walls to make the interior feel warm and sexy, with wooden dividers giving the customer some privacy during their business lunch or romantic meal. While blending in with the ultra modern surroundings of the IFC, it has managed to maintain a classic French look. There is additional seating outside the restaurant that acts like a terrace even though it is still inside, and is a good spot for people watching. This has become a very popular place for lunch and the restaurant seems to have no problem filling the 120 seats.

If you are a fan of oysters, then this is probably the place for you. The menu offers an impressive selection from all over the globe including Island Pacific from Washington, Kumamoto from Japan, Malpeque from Canada and Coffin Bay from Australia. The restaurant receives a delivery of oysters every day so you can be sure they are as fresh as can possibly be.

One of the notable mains is the duck liver with Armagnac jus and toasted brioche. The duck liver simply slides down your throat and is set off well by the jus which leaves a pleasant aftertaste. There is also a generous selection of fish and red meat on the main menu. The chocolate dipped profiteroles filled with vanilla crème patisserie will keep any sweet-toothed person content but you may want to share as the filling is quite heavy.

If you are not in Hong Kong on business, it would be a good idea to visit Le Petit Paris in the afternoon when you may manage to get a window seat and spend a few hours enjoying some French fare while taking in the Hong Kong harbour view.

Lunch is from noon to 3pm, tea is from 3pm to 6pm and dinner is served from 6pm to 11.30pm.

Caprice

Address : Four Seasons Hotel, 8 Finance Street, Central
Tel:3196 8888

With a team of chefs imported all the way from The Four Seasons in Paris, you can be guaranteed that this French food is at the very least going to be authentic. And being the Four Seasons, you can be sure that attention to detail will be spot on. We weren’t disappointed. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. The décor is glamorous and chic with beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and fresh flowers adorning the room. Being on the sixth floor of the hotel ensures that customers are treated to stunning views of the harbour and the Kowloon skyline. The tables are on two levels so that all diners can enjoy the splendid views.

A major feature and the epicentre of the restaurant is the open kitchen. It allows customers to watch the immaculately dressed chefs at work and gives the chefs a chance to gauge customers' reactions to the food.

The menu is typically French but is infused with a contemporary element. Each dish is made with great attention to detail and presented like a work of art, with waiters removing the silver dish lids to display each new creation. The snow crab and mango mousse was just the right consistency and temperature. If you are in the mood for something a little richer, the langoustine ravioli with veal sweetbreads and chanterelle mushrooms in lobster bisque will not disappoint. There is a great seafood menu ranging from scallops to sole and everything else in between. The cod fillet with morel mushroom fricassee was light and tasty, but the star of the day had to be the duck fillet on savoy cabbage which was simply sumptuous and cooked to perfection.

The wine list features Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties, with a good choice of European and New World wines. Three private dining rooms with seating for up to 16 guests are also available and there is an adjoining bar and lounge area for cocktails.

Although Caprice is formal, it is not stuffy and the staff make the experience very special by catering to your every need.

Caprice is open from noon until 2.30pm and from 6pm until 10.30pm.

agnès b. le pâin grillé

Address : Shop 1, G/F, 111 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, HK.
Tel:2577 2718

When you imagine what the interior of a classic French café or restaurant would look like, this little eatery has managed to capture the image to a tee. From the white linen cloths on the wooden tables to the authentic antique tiles on the floor, agnès b. is as close to the real thing as you are likely to get. Thankfully this is also true of the food. The menu is full of signature French dishes with the majority of ingredients being flown in from France each week. The menu is small yet precise and what they do, they do very well. There is a set lunch that changes bi-weekly and the main menu offers typical French fare like baked escargots (snails), an especially tasty onion soup, buchot mussels in a creamy white wine and garlic sauce and a decent selection of meat and fish. The food is hearty and the ingredients are evidently of a high quality. Probably the best thing about the menu is that it doesn’t try to over complicate dishes that don’t need to be complex. The organic chicken is something worth returning for and the chef has to be complimented on not smothering it with any sauce but letting the natural flavour of the meat shine though. A glass cabinet displays a plentiful selection of cakes and pastries which are made daily by the restaurant, and are available to enjoy as dessert or to take home.

The beauty of agnès b is that it is somewhere to go for a coffee with a friend, have lunch a few times a week, bring a loved one for a romantic meal or simply pop in to buy some tasty pastries to take home. In a remarkable way it manages to fit the bill for all these occasions and perhaps the best part is that it won’t break the bank.

The unusual aspect of dining here is that it brings a whole new meaning to the word branding. All the crockery, the wine and even the tea is produced by the company and bears its name. Although the brand has 198 stores worldwide selling everything from clothing to luggage to flowers, Hong Kong was the first place to introduce the dining concept and it must be said, it has done it very well.

The restaurant is open daily from noon to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and noon to 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
