Transport in Hong Kong

MTR

MTR
The efficient rail system, MTR, covers all major districts and leading tourist attractions in the territory and also the boundary with mainland China. Apart from the Airport Express, there are nine lines: Island, Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Tseung Kwan O, Tung Chung, West Rail, East Rail, Ma On Shan and Disneyland Resort. MTR also operates Light Rail running between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun as well as inter-city trains into Mainland China. For enquiries, call the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888.

OCTOPUS CARDS

OCTOPUS CARDS
Visitors staying more than a few days should buy an Octopus stored-value card, which permits travel on the rail systems, buses, minibuses, trams and ferries. The cards are available at service counters at the Airport Express and MTR stations. The minimum price is $100 plus a $50 refundable deposit. For travel, simply swipe the card on the unmissable yellow Octopus pad. The fare is automatically deducted. Airport Express Travel Pass cards are $220 for a single Airport Express journey plus three days unlimited travel on the MTR, or pay $300 for two Airport Express trips ples three days MTR travel. Enquiries: 2266 2222 or www.mtr.com.hk

TAXIS

TAXI
Taxis are relatively cheap compared with other international cities. Starting at $16 for the first two kilometres, the fare increases by $1.40 per 200 metres. If you cross the harbour tunnels, expect to pay a return tunnel toll charge. Flagging taxis on the side of a street is easy, but if there is a double yellow line on the edge of the road, it s illegal for the driver to pick you up or drop you off. It's also illegal not to wear your seatbelt. Receipts given on request.

TRAMS

TAXI
For over a century, double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island have been an inexpensive mode of transportation. For $2 per adult or just $1 for a child or senior, you can ride the full length of the 30-kilometre track. Get on at the back of the tram and pay at the front as you alight. Octopus cards are accepted.
