The Star Ferry

Over a century ago, a star was born, and it still shines bright today. By Alicia Stein

Hong Kong has one of the most convenient and sophisticated metro systems in the world, but tens of thousands still take the Star Ferry – celebrating its 110th birthday this year – to cross Victoria Harbour each day. The ferries are Hong Kong icons with their distinctive green and white double decks, but the biggest attractions are the gentle, lulling ride across the harbour and the magnificent views of the city’s skyline.

Numerous ferry lines transport the people of Hong Kong to and from its islands and downtown areas, but none of them are as iconic as the Star Ferry service that runs between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui; this was the original route when the first ferries set sail over a century ago. Few of the city’s attractions are equally appealing to tourists as they are frequented by locals, but the Star Ferry is an exception. It is an absolute necessity for some commuters crossing the harbour, especially because of its convenient locations: Pier 7 in Central is located near the iconic IFC, while the pier in Tsim Sha Tsui is just steps away from the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Harbour City shopping mall and the lively Canton Road.

Looking down from the highest floors of Central’s skyscrapers, the ferries are relatively small oblong boats with white tops slowly chugging between the two sides of the harbour. It is a nostalgic vision as over a century ago, boats with the same white tops were similarly moving back and forth, transporting passengers between the two bustling locales. Up close, the diesel-electric ferries appear ancient and primitive, which is one of the system’s charms. From the sailor-inspired attire donned by the ferry operators to the thrill of crossing an unsteady gangplank undulating over choppy seas, the quintessentially Hong Kong experience of the Star Ferry is one that is appreciated by locals and cherished by visitors.

Snap-happy tourists can be found on every trip across the harbour taking in the sights and sounds. The Star Ferry Company points out that a ferry ride is one of the world’s best value-for-money sightseeing trips, and at $2.20 per ride on the more comfortable upper deck, it is hard to disagree. The trip is short – only 10 minutes – but the experience is breathtaking. Open-air passenger decks offer a breezy ride with views of the glittering buildings, boats of all kinds, and sometimes a fiery orange sunset to go along with evening rush hour. The journey is especially picturesque from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central with its full view of Hong Kong Island’s famous skyline.

The Star Ferry Company also offers more extensive and luxurious outings in an antique vessel; call 2118 6201 for more information.
