Indulgence is Bliss
New York’s legendary Bliss Spa finally set up shop in Hong Kong a few months ago, bringing the ultra-cool atmosphere and luscious beauty products it is known for. Vanessa Ko gets pampered
While most high-end spas are so focused on serenity that you feel obliged to walk on tiptoes, Bliss Spa offers an entirely different philosophy of fun, energy and indulgence. Like the new W Hotel itself, where Bliss is located on the stratospheric 72nd floor, the spa is a vision of retro glam.
The floors are carpeted in its signature turquoise, glass baubles hang from the ceiling and down the walls, and contorted benches welcome your terry-toweled behind. Bluesy songs take the place of the usual wind chime sounds, and instead of herbal teas, guests are offered a spread of moist brownies, cheese and crackers and sweet lemonade. The point is to make you feel exactly how you wish you could feel all the time – glamorous, frivolous and young.
The no-fuss approach to pampering, however, does not detract from the quality of the treatments. The triple oxygen facial is the most popular treatment at Bliss, offering 85 minutes of intensive skin perfecting. But for those short on time and strapped for cash, the oxygen blast facial ($630) is the next best thing. This express 30-minute facial starts with a neck and shoulder massage and includes a mini peel and a five-minute spray of oxygen.
One of Bliss’s March specials, the double choc pedicure ($570), is the perfect indulgence for a girls’ day out. The nail bar itself is impressive – feminine and retro with bottles of polish dotting the walls and a sleek metal conveyer belt of revolving products. The hour-long pedicure includes detailed buffing, trimming and polish, but just the sweet smell of chocolate is enough to put you in a good mood. Feet are soaked in a hot milky chocolate concoction, and the exfoliating scrub and moisture cream are also made out of the stuff. To top it all off, a pot of hot cocoa is included to literally make you feel good inside and out.
